Silent Generator

Diesel powered Gen Sets from Newtontech

Silent Generators has become important machinery in day to day use when power outages happen. Power outages can be anything from damaged transformers or load shedding. Newtontech Diesel Generators is built for reliability and performance, using renowned components and parts in the manufacturing process.

When purchasing a generator set, it is significant to know where, and how it will be implemented, some examples include integration with solar systems on cloudy days, standby, industrial, or for small businesses and residential use. Plus, to keep in mind is the size and mobility of the generator especially for residential use, silent sets is always big and heavy and placement can be expensive or even not possible in some cases where space is a problem. On this note let’s follow the noise in perspective for residential use, residential use can be categorised in a few classes, like Estates, Loose standing houses, small holdings and farms, some farms can also use larger gen sets and can even go up to industrial use depending on the power usage for that particular farm, but for now let’s focus on more residential and smaller machines. Ordinary households consume 10 to 15 kva power for single phase applications, more massive houses with three phase power supplies can get started at 25 kva and can even go up to 80 kva. For exceptionally massive houses we do not recommend the use smaller as 25 kilo volt ampere for three phase applications on these houses. Back to noise levels: Sound Levels, First let us get some description on sound, as it is a pale area especially for the user, Sound is normally graded as follows: Open Set, Enclosed Set, Silent Set, Super or Ultra Silent Sets, or build in sets. Where Open Generator sets is the loudest, and super silent or build in generators normally is the most silent and also more expensive. Building in generator sets is not inevitably the most silent and lots of factors can play a role in sound into the design and placement of the machinery in the building or room.

generator types

Our focus presently is only the four types: Open, enclosed, silent and ultra or super silent. Before we begin in the descriptions of these sound levels we also need to know the following: 3,000 rpm and 1500 rpm gen sets. Speed rpm (revolutions per minute) represent the speed at which the engine is turning, like on a motor vehicle rpm when the engine is idling, it normally idles at 600 rpm and some vehicles can revs up to 10,000 rpms, generators is only 2 speeds, 3,000 rpms and 1500 rpms where speed of a generator determine the cycles of power in Hz, and must be as close as posable to 50 hz In South Africa. Therefore we can say that 3000 rpm only consist of two Poles and 1500 rpm generators consists of a 4 poles alternator, both will generate 50 hz power.

high speed

Now back to noise levels, the faster the engine turns, the more louder the noise, even enclosed sets at 3,000 rpm is not really silent, these engines is actually classified as semi silent, so we will include this also to our category. We will start out with the loudest types gen sets. Open set 3000 rpm 125 db petrol or diesel. These generator sets are principally the noisiest, as it is typically an air cooled petrol or diesel generator normally at around 125 decibels (DB.). It is compact and also not heavy as this design can utilize more compact engines to obtain the similar power at high speeds, as on low speed generators (1500 rpm). Plus, these generators can purely be used for limited periods of time as it is designed solely for standby use.

semi silent

Semi-Silent (enclosed) 3000 rpm 95 db petrol or diesel. These generator sets is the same builds as the open set 3,000 rpm, except that it is enclosed. The engine and alternator are build into the enclosure and normally also insulated with a larger more silent exhaust system. Also designed for standby use, it is a more expensive than the Open Set 3000 rpm units. These generators can be operated at houses but not in lifestyle estates as the sound level is still high and estates require a decibel range at 60 db or lower.

open set low speed

Open Set 1500 Rpm 70 to 95 db diesel. Typically depending on the engine type, these generators can also be silent from 70 to 95 decibels. This is typically justified to the fact of the different fuel systems and injection types. These generator sets are typically diesel fuel. Open set generators typically consist of a frame where the engine and alternator is mounted upon. It can be operated inside a generator room or can be placed under an external space covered with a roof to preserve it from direct sun and rain.

enclosed

Enclosed 1500 rpm 70 to 95 db diesel. This generator is the most sold as silent generators, generally it is an enclosed set, not sound proofed in any way. Once more the different engine types determine the various sound levels, but not normally more than 95 db. Some enclosures is insulated, but the vents are still somewhat noisy also not recommended for lifestyle estates, ideal for industrial use though, also not recommended for office blocks.

silent generator

Silent 1500 rpm 60 to 85 db diesel. Some rare times also specified as super silent these generators is enclosed silently with good insulation inside and inner baffled. These generators are unsold frequently as it is always unspecified. These efficient generators are more costly than the average enclosed types as it conventionally uses better technologies to intentionally make it silent. Fitted with larger exhaust silencers, ensures low noise levels for these models. Some of these specific models are suitable for some private estates, and it is ideal for office blocks and residential use. It is also ideal for loose standing houses.

quiet type

Super, Ultra Silent Enclosed 50 to 70 db diesel. If you absolutely need silence, this is the way to advance, Specific build and is recommended for estates where the estates allow the use for generators. This key generator uses the same specifications as the Silent generator set. It is equally adapted with extra baffles on the intake and exhaust vents to dampen the sound even more. Specific engine types are used to achieve these sound levels. This is naturally a costly machine and is expressly ordered. Likely lots of times compared with a possible price of an enclosed generator and possible disappointment typically follow. Superior silent generators are more expensive than any of the above-mentioned Units. It uses more sound baffles on the enclosure; also, air flow must be still efficient to carefully maintain the machine temperature, especially on high outputs.

Disclaimer:

Please take note that there are several factors in sound, for example on a cloudy day sound can be more loud as on a sunny day, another factor can include time like late night and during the day, in short the colder the day temperature, the louder the sound, and on an hotter day the more silent the sound, (it is the density of the air in which sounds travel). Therefore, this is just an indication to advise our clients to receive some, knowledge of generator sets.
